Fellas, let’s face it, you’re not that into the girlie-girlie stuff of a wedding. That’s what moms are for, right? It’s fun to taste cake, but it doesn’t really go with your favorite beer. Dressing up is okay, but why do the shoes have to feel so weird?
Then one night, the Love of Your Life finishes the rundown of how many days until the you-know-what and all the one million things “we” still have to do (she says conspiratorially) – What about the first dance?
What dance? … you answer nonchalantly, hoping you heard wrong.
First dance, she says, as if this is the simplest thing in the world. You know, the first dance at the wedding reception to our song.
Our song?
Oh, dear, and there it is out on the table.
What do you do? Right away, get on the Internet and research “first wedding dance” and where and who can help you. Attend a wedding show. Ask your friends. Start the whole process ASAP. And while you’re at it, put on your memory suit and start thinking about what song is “Our Song.”
Go to iTunes, your CD stash and your iPOD and listen to music, lots of it. Be ready with a list of songs. Don’t forget to mention that, of course, her choice for “Our Song” would be perfect.
After checking out all the available dance meccas in your area, how do you decide where to go and who to use. Obviously price is a consideration and distance, since you don’t want to sit in traffic for three hours just to dance for one.
Visit the venue and ask for references for the instructor(s) and studio. Word of mouth is a great resource and there are some chat rooms on the Web where you can ask about instructors and studios in your area.
Think about what you’d like to do with your dance. Are you an extrovert? Introvert? Do you want to perform or is this just a dance for the two of you with lots of people watching?
Your dance will rely heavily upon your song. If your song is “Brown Eyed Girl,” the dance will be swingy and upbeat. If your song is “Come What May,” the dance will be slow and elegant. The song is what gives the instructor the tempo and clues to the type of dance to create.
Remember gentlemen, you’ll be leading the dance, so take into account the amount of time you’ll have to practice and the number of lessons you feel will make you the least anxious when the big moment comes.
Now get out there and have some fun! This is about the last place where your lovely lady will be fine with you telling her what to do by using your dancing frame and feet on the dance floor. With practice and patience you’ll be her prince charming on the dance floor as well as off.
